Acupuncture is a clinically proven medical modality that is over 5,000 years old. Acupuncture in conjunction with Chinese herbal therapy makes a complete and comprehensive healing art called Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr Japa Khalsa practices this ancient Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture in Espanola, NM.
Acupuncture is a technique of treating many conditions by passing very thin disposable sterile needles through the skin to specific points on the body. This stimulation balances the patient and helps physically, emotionally and mentally. Chinese medicine acknowledges that the body, mind, and spirit are interrelated, and treats the body as a whole system.
The system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the theory that energy flows through certain pathways of the body called meridians. If there is blockage in this flow, it is reflected as an imbalance in the body that is causing pain or an internal malfunction of an organ.
What can I expect?
The number of treatments needed varies from one case to another and while there are exceptions, chronic conditions usually require more treatment. Many conditions respond quickly while others require more time.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we make an effort to educate our patients to be more aware of their bodies, and participate in their own health care. This increased personal involvement helps patients maintain a better state of health, preventing future health problems.
About Chinese Herbs
In the course of your treatment, you may be prescribed Chinese herbal supplements. Chinese herbs consist of a variety of naturally found products that have medicinal properties which add to the healthful benefits of acupuncture and TCM treatments. Herbal formulas can be taken in a variety of ways. They can be taken as a tea, a tincture, or in a pill or a capsule form. Herbal formulas tend to be customized for each patient according to their specific health needs. Herbal formulas along with dietary recommendations are often part of the treatment plan.
How Acupuncture feels
Many patients comment that it is an unfamiliar sensation but pleasant and relaxing. The needles used are sterile and are extremely thin. All needles are individually wrapped and discarded after the first use. An energetic sensation can be felt, but it differs from pain. Your acupuncturist may also do other techniques such as cupping, moxa or Tui Na, which is a form of Oriental massage.
